Everything you need to know about the Kaboni Biochar Project
Biochar is a stable, carbon-rich material produced through pyrolysis — the thermal decomposition of biomass under limited oxygen. It locks carbon in soil for centuries while improving fertility.
By converting short-cycle biological carbon into a stable, aromatic form that resists microbial decomposition, biochar keeps carbon locked away in soil for hundreds to thousands of years.
The production facility is in the Ntungamo / Mbarara area of Southwest Uganda. The pilot application site is Glory Mixed Farm in the Lyantonde / Rakai area, covering 246 hectares.
Farmers supply residues → residues transported to our facility → pyrolysis produces biochar → biochar returned to the same farming communities → applied to soil to improve fertility and sequester carbon.
Agricultural residues (coffee husks, maize cobs, rice husks) and forest encroacher species (sickle bush, Acacia hockii), plus other local biomass confirmed through laboratory characterisation.
As a soil amendment to improve water retention, nutrient availability and crop productivity — and simultaneously as a mechanism for durable carbon removal.
Once biochar is applied to soil, the durable carbon it contains is measured, verified and issued as high-integrity removal credits under the Verra Standard.
The project is aligned with the Verified Carbon Standard (Verra), approved biochar methodology (VM0044), and Uganda's National Climate Change Regulations.
Emissions monitoring, sustainable feedstock sourcing, laboratory characterisation of every batch, and independent third-party verification.
